We were approached by Focus Green and asked if West Lancashire Borough Council would like to undertake a water audit to see if any of our sites had been overcharged. At the time Focus Green was also working with several councils in the Northwest and Northeast of England including Wyre, Eden, South Lakes District, Carlisle City Cumbria County, Redcar & Cleveland Borough, Hartlepool Borough, Middlesbrough, Gateshead, Sunderland and Northumberland County etc. It was explained the work would be carried out on a “no win no fee” basis.
After providing Focus Green with recent copies of water invoices for all of our sites, they were able look at our monthly invoices to our water supplier checking consumption, current and historic charges.
The audit showed that invoices for several sites were wrongly charged which resulted in credits of just under £40,000 but the most important point for the council, it was the annual saving of £12,450. This annual saving will help the council every year.
Having Focus Green carry out the water audit was an essential exercise as we had no idea that our water charges were charged wrongly and accepted our bills as correct so without the specialist knowledge and tenacity of Focus Green we would still be paying too much.
