We were approached by Focus Green and asked if Carlisle City Council would like to undertake a water audit to see if any of our sites had been overcharged. At the time Focus Green were also working with several councils in the North West and North East of England including Eden, South Lakes District, Cumbria County, Redcar & Cleveland Borough, Hartlepool Borough, Middlesbrough, and Northumberland County etc. It was explained the work would be carried out on a “no win no fee” basis.
After providing Focus Green with recent copies of water invoices for all of our sites, they were able look at our monthly invoices to our water supplier checking consumption, current and historic charges.
The process revealed that invoices for several of our car parks were wrongly charged. Focus Green's expertise after negotiating with the water company resulted in the removal of all overcharges which amounted to just under £30,000. More importantly in the removal of these overcharges we will be saving £5,558 every year on our water bills. What great news for the council to be saving over £5,000 every year on water charges.
We had no idea that our water charges were charged wrongly and accepted our bills as correct so without the specialist knowledge and tenacity of Focus Green we would still be paying too much.
