In November 2021, Bakery in Cornwall (BIC) was informed by their water service provider that the calculation for their trade effluent volumes was incorrect, and charges should be higher. Further to this, they proposed to apply this retrospectively. Water Management Solutions was asked to review the position, to verify the claims being made.

Initially, a detailed analysis of the site's water and trade effluent billing was carried out, alongside other correspondence from the water provider. Dialogue also took place with the site to understand their processes, and in particular, how water is used on site.

Following comprehensive analysis of site data, it was found that the water provider's assumptions were flawed, and in fact, Bakery in Cornwall was being overcharged, not undercharged. Following presentation of arguments, a refund of just over £100k was agreed. An ongoing saving of almost £101k per year will also be produced from this work.

Further to the above, additional potential cost-saving opportunities have been identified as part of the review, which are now being explored.
